Build Your Hot Tent Setup

A complete hot tent setup has three parts:

  1. A stove-ready tent. Every tent on this page has a stove jack built in.
  2. A wood stove. We carry the Winnerwell Woodlander Double-View and the Winnerwell Woodlander Large.
  3. Chimney and stove jack parts. The Stove Jack Flashing Kit (XL) protects the canvas where the pipe exits, and a triple wall pipe section stays cooler where the pipe passes through the tent.

How a Stove Jack Works

A stove jack is a fire-resistant opening in the tent's roof or wall. The chimney pipe from your wood stove runs up through it, so smoke and heat exit outside while the canvas around the pipe stays protected. On our bell tents, the stove jack sits in the ceiling and has a cover to keep rain out when you're not using a stove. Adding a flashing kit creates a snug, weather-sealed boot around the pipe. See how to install a stove jack flashing kit.

Choosing a Stove for Your Hot Tent

Match the stove to your tent size and how cold it gets. A larger tent and colder nights call for a bigger firebox and longer burn times. A smaller tent heats quickly, so a compact stove is usually plenty. Read how to choose the right tent stove and the best bell tent stoves, or contact us and we'll help you pick.

Hot Tent Safety

  • Keep your distance. Keep the stove at least 18 inches from the canvas walls, and follow your stove maker's clearances.
  • Protect the floor. Set the stove on a fireproof stove mat or board.
  • Use a spark arrestor on top of the chimney to keep embers off your roof.
  • Ventilate. Keep a vent or window cracked, and keep a battery CO alarm in the tent.
  • Flame resistant isn't fireproof. Our bell tent canvas is treated to be fire retardant, but even treated canvas can be damaged by direct heat or sparks. Any canvas tent needs safe clearances and a spark arrestor.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher close, like the Element E50.

Hot Tent FAQs:

What is a hot tent?

A hot tent is a tent designed to be heated with a wood stove inside. It has a stove jack for the chimney pipe and is usually made from heavy canvas, often treated to be fire retardant.

Do your tents come with a stove jack?

Yes. Every tent in this collection has a stove jack built in. The stove itself, chimney pipe and flashing kit are sold separately.

Can I add a stove jack to a tent that doesn't have one?

It's possible with a stove jack kit made for canvas tents, but it means cutting your canvas, and it needs to be done carefully. If you're shopping for a new tent and plan to use a stove, it's easier and safer to choose one with a stove jack already built in.

Can I leave a wood stove burning overnight?

We recommend letting the fire burn down before you go to sleep instead of loading it up for the night. If a small fire is still going after bedtime, keep a vent open, use a spark arrestor and a battery CO alarm, and never leave a hot stove when no one is in the tent.

Is a wood stove better than a propane heater in a tent?

For long, cold nights, usually yes. A wood stove vents its exhaust outside and gives off dry heat, while a propane heater burns inside the tent and adds moisture. Propane heaters are handy for quick warm-ups, but only indoor-rated ones, and never while you sleep. See our propane heater safety guide.

Will a stove make my tent too hot?

It can, especially in a smaller tent. Start with a small fire, use the stove's damper and air controls, and open a window or vent if it gets too warm.

What's the best hot tent size?

For couples and small families, a 13' (4M) tent heats quickly. A 16' (5M) is the most popular size, with room for beds, a stove and gear. A 19' (6M) or a wall tent works well for larger groups and basecamps.
